Incredible India Celebrates National Tourism Day

India has been an escapade for the seekers since time immemorial. It would be not uncanny to comment that the term "exploration" forms the basis of its history, culture, traditions, ethics and values.

After the erstwhile colonial powers departed from the subcontinent, around circa 1948, a Tourist Traffic Committee was formed to promote tourism. The first regional offices of the same were established in Delhi and Mumbai. Three years later, in 1951, more of such were commissioned in Kolkata and Chennai.

A department was established in the Ministry of Tourism and Communication which was to be led by the Deputy General in the rank of Joint Secretary.

National Day of Tourism is observed on the 25th of January each year. The day highlights the prominence of tourism in the country and how it impacts India's economic prospects. It seeks to promote the country's diversified tourist circuit comprising of man made monuments to natural wonders.

This year, the theme of National Tourism Day is 'Dekho Apna Desh'. Owing to the deadly coronavirus, tourism was deeply impacted. This time, this day will be observed virtually. Netizens can take the pledge for visiting at least 15 locations by the year 2022.

Several twitter handles including that of Prahlad Singh Patel took to twitter to congratulate the nation on the occassion.

The Union Minister also inaugrated Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering (IISM) branch at Kargil.

The World Travel and Tourism Council calculated that tourism generated ₹16.91 lakh crore or 9.2% of India's GDP in 2018 and supported 42.673 million jobs, 8.1% of its total employment. The sector is predicted to grow at an annual rate of 6.9% to ₹32.05 lakh crore by 2028 (9.9% of GDP). India's medical tourism has an estimated worth of 3 billion USD. India has emerged as the fastest growing market in the Asia-Pacific region in terms of international tourist spending.

As in total, the country has 38 world heritage sites making the sixth largest number of sites in the world.T hese include 30 cultural sites, 7 natural sites and 1 mixed-criteria site.

However, tourism can come at the cost of the environment therefore, it is imperative to develop sustainable methods such as eco-tourism, a programme that is "Nature based, Ecologically sustainable, where education and interpretation is a major constituent and where local people are benefited."
