Walking Down The Political Memory Lane of 2020
Politics, a much quintessential tittle-tattle in India, a topic that’s discussed with every tea, and literally the backbone of one of the most populous country. While we say a tour to major events in 2020 Indian politics, it is eminent to include the major happenings around politics in year 2020.
As we bid goodbye to the slaughter year 2020, here’s the memory lane to the top political trends of 2020.

CAA
Citizenship Amendment Act, or you can say the act that shook India to the core, brought politicians in a question-answer battle and divided the country into divergent ideologies.
CAA was passed by the Indian parliament on 11 December 2019 and the act came to power on 10th January 2020.
CAA states that members of Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian communities who have come from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan till December 31, 2014 facing religious persecution there will not be treated as illegal immigrants but given Indian citizenship.
"In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section [2] of the section 1 of the Citizenship [Amendment] Act, 2019 [47 of 201], the central government hereby appoints the 10th day of January, 2020, as the date on which the provisions of the said Act shall come into force," read a notification from Central government. From this statement onwards, India saw protests that were never seen before. Almost seventy organisations decided to participate against CAA. States like Delhi and Assam were the ones with major protests, while Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh became the centre-spot of people’s aggression.
The protests continued for months, several people were arrested, and were put to death. Since common people believe that CAA is against muslims and its only purpose is to vilify muslim community, the act made it to headlines for months. Meanwhile, BJP and the right-wing party struggled to fortify its beneficials and claim its contribution in their Hindu nation ideology.
2. Ram Mandir
It was in February when the news of ‘Ram Mandir Construction in Ayodhya’ captured everybody’s attention. The fifteen-member panel was appointed to oversee uninterrupted construction of Ram temple in the city and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s former Principal Secretary Nripendra Misra was the appointed head of construction related operations.
Where on one side, Ram temple created an endless celebration, some critics questioned its construction to be the Centre’s agenda to divert attention from the real crisis.
Sidelining the questions raised, Modi visited Ayodhya on 5th August for the bhoomi pujan after which the construction officially started.
3.Bihar elections
Bihar elections are the much-hyped political stakes in our country. The election was held in three phases in 243 seats through October-November. While it is more about who wins every time but this election had all the eyes marked on Tejaswi Yadav, the RJD leader who unfortunately lost after the total vote counts.
Tejaswi being a youth leader promised 10lakh jobs in coming years and played a well-strategized foot towards swiping off Nitish Kumar of Janata Dal (United). But call it glorious luck, NDA’s support or JD(U)’s autarchy in the state, Nitish again won and became the 22nd Chief Minister of Bihar.
4. Love Jihad Law
Uttar Pradesh now ruled by Yogi Adityanath who is everyday vocal about his Hindu ideologies and saffron attire recently announced the anti-muslim law quoted as ‘love jihad’.
Love jihad law basically defines punishment and fine under three different heads. Those found guilty of conversion done though “misrepresentation, force, undue influence, coercion, allurement or by any fraudulent means” in contravention of the law would face jail term of one to 5 years, and a minimum fine of Rs 15,000.
While UP is not the only state to implement this law, people fear that the Yogi’s government will test its extremity and UP will no longer be a place for muslims.
5.Farm Bills 2020
The Indian farm reform of 2020 achieved excessive attention this year. The three farm bills i.e Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020, Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020′ and Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill 2020’ were implemented on 27th September 2020.
As the Indian farmers came to know about the reform, they were furious and since then farmers are protesting to get back their rights and waiting for Centre’s decision to revoke the three bills. The farmers specially from Delhi, Punjab and Haryana made it to fasts, blocking inter-state borders and hunger strikes awaiting Centre’s decision. It was September then and now December, the farmer protests continue along with Centre’s ignorance on the farmer issues.
