Centre’s Farm Laws Repeal Proposal: A U-Turn or Masterstroke?
In the wake of the tenth round of talks between the Centre and the farmers, the farmers have finally stood up for some discussion.
The agitated farmers who threatened to march towards the India Gate on 26th January have reached Delhi crossing the Singhu border and are still adamant to their sayings.
However, the Centre owns to have a masterstroke when it said it would repeal the farm laws for eighteen months.
This is the very first time when the distressed farmers have agreed to lend an ear to anything other than demand for farm laws repeal.
The farmers heretofore did not believe in any piece fed by the Central government and also rejected the committee set by the Supreme Court declaring their will to accept nothing but revoking farm laws.
The coming Friday is decided to be the date for the next discussion day where the farmers will put forward their takings, the farm unions will decide whether to accept the eighteen months suspension of farm bills or continue with the protests.
Jamhoori Kisan Sabha secretary Kulwant Singh Sandhu who attended the discussion said “For a change, today’s meeting was held in a cordial atmosphere… we hardly had a confrontation with the Union Ministers. There was a very important development in the tenth round. The ministers made a proposal of not implementing the farm laws for a period ranging from 18 to 24 months. Minister Som Prakash said the government will not implement the laws for two years, but the two other ministers (Narendra Singh Tomar and Piyush Goyal) said one-and-half years. They also said they will file an affidavit regarding this in the Supreme Court.”
He continued “For MSP (farmers are seeking legal guarantee on MSP), they said let us make a committee to decide this issue, our union members can also be part of it. We did not give them any instant reply. Our 32 Punjab farmer unions will be meeting on Thursday morning and the Samyukta Kisan Morcha will be meeting in the afternoon to discuss these crucial issues. We will get back to the government on January 22. I would call this meeting a very important meeting for all. Finally, the government is in a mood to resolve the issue… As of now, our decision to hold a Republic Day tractor parade stands.”
The government’s decision of filing an affidavit to the Supreme Court for suspension of the farm laws 2020 for one and half years tends to rebuild the farmers’ minds as they are consolidated with the government standing for them.
While many ministers who attended the meeting agreed to the government’s decision, Agriculture minister Narendra Singh Tomar repeatedly pronounced that the farm bills will not be repealed at any cost. Tomar, directing towards the farm unions, said ‘We can sit till midnight but we must find a way out on this.’
Tomar further stated that the Centre has offered various amendments to the laws which were rejected by the farmers and this is not something that should continue, at least the farmers should sit and talk. He also said that it is imminent to have a parallel discussion over the Centre’s new decision and parallely continue to convince the farmers for accepting the committee.
Where many of the farm groups have decided to accept the Centre’s decision and accept suspension of bills for eighteen month, the other farm leaders like Balbir Singh Rajewal still demands total repeal of farm laws.
The Centre’s decision comes so far to be one true masterstroke at a point but on the other hand it is speculated to be the government’s U-turn.
Farmer protests are not merely a concern of bunch of farmers but the world stands with farmers. Social media, the platform that is for and by the people today stood with #norepealnogharwapsi.
Whatever the decision is, the world awaits to see if Central government will agree with the farmers or the farmers will fulfil their threats marching on 26th January.
