Hindustani Classical Legend Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan Dies At 89 | “His Demise Made The Cultural World Poorer”: PM Modi

Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan, one of the renowned Hindustani classical singers and symbolic figurehead of the Rampur Sahaswan Gharana, expired at the age of 89 in his residence in Mumbai on Sunday.

Born and brought up in Badaun, Uttrar Pradesh, Ustad Ghulam Mustafa belonged to a family of court musicians in the era of Nawabs. Ustad Inayat Hussain Khan was the court musician at he court of Nawab Wajid Ali Khan and also maternal grandfather to Ustad Mustafa. Ustad Mustafa learnt music from his father Warish Hussain khan, accompanied by his family members including Ustad Fida Hussain Khan, Court singer at Royal Durbar of Baroda, and his nephew, Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan.

Ustad Ghulam Mustafa had his first musical performance at the age of 8, during a Janamashtami (Lord Krishna’s Birth Celebrations) concert where he was praised as a child prodigy. Another wonderful thing about Ustad Mustafa was his readiness to all forms of music, he owned a rarity in classical music. At times when most of the classical musicians were avoiding Hindi Cinema music, he found it quite easier to adapt.

Ut Ghulam Mustafa, until his death, stayed an influential guru for many prominent musicians, namely, Ut Rashid Khan (also his nephew), Waheeda Rehman, Manna Dey, Hariharan, Alisha Chinoy, Shilpa Rao, Geeta Dutt, Asha Bhosle, and Sonu Nigam.

He was a recipient of the Padma Shri Award in 1991, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2003, the Padma Bhushan Award in 2006 and the Padma Vibhushan Award in 2018.

The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi called it a loss for the Cultural World and mentioned that his demise made the cultural world ‘Poorer’. He wrote, “The passing away of Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan Sahab leaves our cultural world poorer. He was a doyen of music, a stalwart of creativity whose works endeared him to people across generations. I have fond memories of interacting with him. Condolences to his family and admirers.”

 

The Indian Home Minister, Amit Shah also paid condolences to the legendary musician, he wrote, “Anguished to learn about the demise of legendary musician Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan Sahab. He dedicated his life in the service of music and made lasting contributions to Indian classical music. His timeless creations mesmerised millions of hearts. My deepest condolences.”

 

 

A publisher from Ebury Publishing, Milee Ashwarya took to twitter and wrote, “Deeply saddened by the demise of legendary singer, guru n our author Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan. Will always cherish n miss his warmth, kindness and smile that lit up the room. @PenguinIndia @rabbanigmk #ADreamILivedAlone.”

 

“Deeply saddened by the demise of the legendary musician Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan Sahab. He remains immortalised in our memory through his musical compositions. My condolences to his family, loved ones and fans,” wrote Jagat Prakash Nadda, BJP Party President.

 

Calling Ustad Ghulam Mustafa ‘A Sweetest Teacher’, the Indian Musician and Golden Globe winner, A.R. Rehman wrote, “The sweetest teacher of all ..May the Ghafoor-ur-Rahim give you a special  place  in the next world #UstadGhulamMustafa.”

 

Another Indian Legendary Musician, Amjad Ali Khan took to social media and wrote, “Very saddened to know about the passing away of Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan. He was one of the most respected and versatile Vocalists of our country. His musical legacy lives on forever! My deepest condolences to his family. May his soul Rest In Peace.”

 

 

“Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan was a legend of Indian classical music. I feel honoured to have conferred on him Padma Vibhushan in 2018. In his passing, music world has lost not only a doyen but also a mentor for young generation. Heartfelt condolence to his family,friends & disciples,” said President of India, Ram Nath Kovind.

 

“Saddened by the passing away of legendary Indian classical musician, Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan. He was a musical maestro who enthralled people through his melodious singing. His passing leaves a void in the world of music. My deepest condolences to his family,” said Vice President of India, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu.

 

“Saddened to learn about the demise of Padma Vibhushan Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan Ji. It’s indeed a great loss for Indian-classical music & the universe of performing arts. My deepest condolences to his family & admirers,” wrote The Health Minister Of India, Dr. Harsh Vardhan.
