The city of Ahemdabad which has been the former capital to the Indian state of Gujarat has come under limelight much recently. Ranking at the fifth position for the most populous city in India, Ahemdabad holds 5.6 Million human lives in its heart. Located at the banks of Sabarmati river, the city makes an amazing touring destination for the one bitten by a travel bug. So, why is it trending on social media and what should we understand from the trending hashtag #Karnavati.
The name hails from Rani Karnavati, wife of Rajput ruler of Mewar Rana Sanga, the princess had temporarily ruled the state of Bundi, India. It was in her name that the city was named as ‘Karnavati’- later renamed to Ahemdabad by a Mughal Emperor Ahmed Shah in 1411.
Earlier, the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Vijay Rupani had announced changing the city’s name during an event of Gujarat’s New Year. The state’s ruling party BJP having governments in other states too, have already changed certain city names in the recent years. Some notable changes being Allahabad to Prayagraj and Faizabad city to Ayodhya.
Meanwhile Maharashtra’s political party reiterated its earlier demand of changing city names as, Aurangabad to Sambhaji Nagar, and Osmanabad to Dharashiv.
The BJP government in the hilly state of Himachal Pradesh also showed interest in changing the capital’s name from Shimla to Shyamala but backed off their call following an outrage from the city’s residents.
The Trend On Social Media
The former FTII Chairman, Gajendra Chauhan took to twitter in support of the move, he wrote, “Retweet if You Agree with Me.”
With many welcoming the initiative to change the name of Mughal conquered cities with a claim to protect their cultural integrity.
