INDIAN MUJAHIDEEN TERRORIST AZIR KHAN SENTENCED TO DEATH IN BATLA HOUSE ENCOUNTER CASE
This Monday, a Delhi court made it to the headlines after its superficial ruling that crossed the previous benchmark on infamous Batla House Encounter. The court awarded death penalty to Ariz Khan, a terrorist from the terror group called Indian Mujahideen. The incident occurred in 2008 when Police had an encounter with a group of terrorists in the south Delhi neighborhood. Ariz Khan is being held guilty for the Indian Mujahideen terror incident that led to the death of Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma, and for the injuries occurred to other policemen.
Ariz being a native of Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh, fled the spot in 2008 and was on run until his arrest by a special cell of Delhi Police in February 2018. After much legal trials in court, last week he was convicted guilty by the Delhi court for the terror incident. He is also alleged as the mastermind of serial blats across various states in India, these being Delhi, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Uttar Pradesh.
The police department sought the death punishment for Khan as the necessity in providing justice to the martyrdom of a police officer. Additional Public Prosecutor A. Ansari, representing the case on behalf of the police department, said the case demands unique punishment, which can be a capital punishment.
Meanwhile, Advocate MS Khan while defending Ariz Khan’s case, opposed the death sentence claiming that the incident was not preplanned.
On March 8, the court had mentioned that it was “duly proved that Ariz Khan and his associates are involved in the murder of police officer and fired gunshots at the police officials.”
The Delhi court calling it “rarest of the rare cases” that suffice the death penalty. A fine of INR 11 lakh is also imposed on Ariz Khan by the Additional Sessions Judge Sandeep Yadav. The court also shared the information that a sum of INR 10 lakh from this amount will be given to the martyred police officer, Mohan Chand Sharma’s family.
