Defence Minister’s Exclusive Interview To ANI | I Know More About Agriculture Than Rahul Gandhi Does: Rajnath Singh
Central Minister of Defence, Rajnath Singh in an exclusive interview to the editor of ANI, Smita Prakash mentioned “Indian farmers as the backbone of the nation’s economy and raised strong objection against few politicians framing farmers as ‘Naxalites’ and ‘Khalistanis’. The defence minister also hit out at INC leader Rahul Gandhi by calling him a person who’s completely unaware of farming methods.
Targeting Rahul Gandhi over his verbal attacks on farm rules, Rajnath Singh mentioned himself as a person born into an agricultural family and with both parents as farmers, he said he knows more about agriculture than the Congress leader.
“Rahul Ji is younger than me, and I know more about agriculture than he does. I was born to a farmer family and I grew among famers, and as a farmer. Our Prime Minister Narender Modi Ji also belong to poor farmer family and therefore our government cannot make any law against the famers. In my long 40 years political career, I have closely worked with farmers, and also got the chance to be an agricultural minister in the past, so we understand a farmer’s trouble. This is what I want to say, and there is no reason to say anything more,” said Rajnath Singh.
The Defence Minister said that the farm reform laws are in the interest of the farmers and that farmers should allow the laws to be applied for two years. Rajnath Singh also said the government was "pained" by the farmers' strike.
"The farmers were responsible for getting the economy out of trouble during the era of economic crisis. They're the backbone of our economy. On many occasions, they have taken the nation out of turbulent waters,” Singh said.
He proposed that farmers protesting against three farm laws should engage with the government in a rational discussion on any provision. The government of India will look into the farm bill along with the farmers but the discussion should be clause by clause and if farmers find any issues with a particular clause of the bill, government will definitely work on re-amendment of that particular section. “However, coming up with a determined mind-set of straightway abrogating the bill, we do not support that kind of mentality,”said the union minister during his interview.
