Makar Sankranti is welcomed every year in January and signifies the closure of the wintertime and the start of the new harvesting season. This year it is being celebrated on 14 January. It will be held on 14 January this year.

It is dedicated to the Lord of the Sun. It also refers to a specific solar day in the Hindu calendar. On this felicitous day, the sun joins the zodiac sign of Capricorn or Makar that signifies the culmination of the winter season and the beginning of warmer weather. As per Hindu Calender, this is the start of month called Magh.

To acknowledge the difference that is created by the revolution around the sun, every 80 years the day of Sankranti is extended by one day. On the day of Makar Sankranti, the sun begins its path to the north or Uttarayan (Hindi for Journey to the North), and that is why this festival is also known as the Uttarayan.

Makar Sankrant - History

Sankranti is believed to be the Deity. According to the legend, Sankranti executed a devil called Sankarasur. A day after MakarSankrant is called Karidin or Kinkrant . On this day, Devi killed the Kinkarasur demon. Details about Makar Sankranti is present in Panchang. The Panchang is the Hindu Archive, which offers details on the age, type, clothes, course and activity of Sankranti.

Makarsankranti is celebrated throughout Indian and across the world, majorly among Hindu, Sikh & Jain Communities with different names according to regional believes and languages.

One day before Makar Sankranti, Lohri is celebrated with optimism in India, especially in Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab. During the night, people assemble around the bonfire and toss til, puffed rice and popcorn into the bonfire flames. Prayers are offered to the fire, seeking prosperiety in wealth, health, and hapiness in life altogether.
