‘Shaheedi Diwas’ of Hind-Di-Chaddar Guru Tegh Bahadur

On this day of 19 December of 1675, the Ninth of Ten Gurus of Sikhism was beheaded by Cruel Mughal Emperor, Muhi-ud-din Muhammad aka Aurangzeb. This incident of Mughal cruelty happened in front of a massive crowd in Chandni Chowk, Old Delhi and the Guru Tegh Bahadur was beheaded due to his refusal to accept Islam. Sikh tradition states that the Guru stood up for the rights of Kashmiri Pandits who approached him to intercede on their behalf with the emperor and requested him to repeal a recently imposed jizya (A form of tax imposed on non-muslims).

Along with Guru Tegh Bahadur, there were three Hindus and his associates who sacrificed their lives in honour of Hinduism & Sikhism, and against the injustice of Mughal Empire. They were Bhai Mati Das, Bhai Dayala, and Bhai Sati Das, who were all executed at a Mughal Police Station in the Chandni Chowk area of Old Delhi, under the direct orders of the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, right before the martyrdom of Guru Tegh Bahadur.

Bhai Mati Das was executed by being bound between two pillars and was cut in two, alive.

Bhai Dayala was executed by placing him into a big cauldron full of water and later boiled to death.

Whereas Bhai Sati Das was executed by the means of being wrapped in cotton wool soaked in oil and later burnt to death by fire.

On this Guru Tegh Bahadur Shaheedi Diwas, we pay our tribute to him by mentioning few of his enlightening sayings as below:

“Give up your head, but forsake not those whom you have undertaken to protect. Sacrifice your life, but relinquish not your faith.”

“For whom praise and dispraise are the same, and on whom greed and attachment have no effect. Consider him only enlightened whom pain and pleasure do not entrap. Consider such a person saved.”

“O mother, I have been blessed with the wealth of God’s Name. My Mind is free from wandering and is established in peace. Avarice and worldly love dare not touch me and pure divine knowledge fills me. Greed and desire cannot affect me. I am totally immersed in Lord’s devotion.”

“If the hands, feet, or body are covered with dust, they are cleansed by washing them with water. if clothes are made unclean, by use of soap they are washed of impurity. If the buddhi (intellect) is defined by sin, love of the Name will purify it.”

Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji always gave this message that do not do injustice to anyone and do not scare anyone. He sacrificed his life to save the lives of others. He established community kitchens and wells wherever he went.

“Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji’s life epitomised courage and compassion. On his Shaheedi Diwas, I bow to the great Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji and recall his vision for a just and inclusive society,” said Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of Republic of India.
