Earthquake strikes Indonesia

A 6.2 magnitude powerful earthquake struck Indonesia's Sulawesi island on Friday, 15th 2021 which killed 10 people and injured hundreds as per media reports. The earthquake stuck northeast of Majene in the Indonesian province of West Sulawesi.
 

The earthquake did not trigger any tsunami warning but the head of Indonesia's Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Dwikorita Karnawati, told a news conference that strong aftershocks could follow, with a possibility that another powerful quake could trigger a tsunami.

The earthquake was accompanied by nearly 26 aftershocks as per reports and more are expected in the upcoming hours.

Why is Indonesia prone to Earthquakes ?

The country lies in the Pacific Ring of Fire which is a region around much of the rim of the Pacific Ocean where many volcanic eruptions and earthquakes occur. The Ring of Fire is a horseshoe-shaped belt about 40,000 km (25,000 mi) long and up to about 500 km wide. The Ring of Fire is a direct result of plate tectonics which includes specifically the movement, collision and destruction of lithospheric plates under and around the Pacific Ocean. The collisions have created a nearly continuous series of subduction zones, where volcanoes are created and earthquakes occur

The infamous 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami had also orginated off the west coast of northern Sumatra in Indonesia.
