SHABNAM: FIRST WOMAN TO BE HANGED IN THE INDEPENDENT INDIA | FIND THE COMPLETE STORY OF THE AMROHA CASE, A BRUTAL CASE OF INHUMANITY

Shabnam of Uttar Pradesh, who was accused of murdering her family in 2008 along with her lover Salim, is likely to become the first woman to be hanged in Independent India. The Governor and President have already refused Shabnam's mercy petition, she is likely to be hanged soon after an execution warrant is issued. Shabnam is currently imprisoned in Rampur District Jail, while Salim is imprisoned in Agra Prison.

Speaking to news media, jailer Rakesh Kumar Verma said that arrangements for hanging had begun by the prison administration. The President has rejected her mercy petition. We have asked the Amroha administration to obtain her death warrant. As soon as it is issued, we will transfer her to Mathura district jail as it has the provision for hanging a woman.

The only prison in the country which has a female execution chamber is Mathura Jail.

Shabnam's uncle, Sattar Ali, said that she should be hanged because seven members of her own family had been brutally murdered by her. Advocate Arshad Ansari said there were previous cases where life imprisonment was granted to female convicts sentenced to death.

In the meantime, Pawan Jallad of Meerut, who had executed the convicts in the gangrape-murder case of Nirbhaya, visited Mathura jail and proposed some reforms. "She murdered her family along with her lover, so they should be hanged. I will do the trial, test the rope, check the board whether it's absolutely ready," he said.

On April 14, 2008, in Bawankhedi village of Amroha district, Shabnam and Salim were found guilty of killing their parents, two brothers and their wives, and their 10-month-old nephew, because their family was against their relationship.

Initially, Shabnam, a double MA (in English and Geography) who taught at the village primary school, pretended that unidentified assailants had attacked her home. however, Shabnam later admitted that she had involved Salim in the crime and the duo made her family members drink milk mixed with lethal sedatives and throttled the little nephew afterwards.
