THE FLIPKART’S MYNTRA TO CHANGE ITS BRAND LOGO AFTER A WOMAN FILED COMPLAINT TO MUMBAI POLICE FOR IT BEING ‘OFFENSIVE’

After a Mumbai-based female activist filed a complaint with the state cyber police claiming that it was disrespectful and offensive against women, the e-commerce firm Myntra agreed to change its logo.

The complaint was lodged in December 2020 by Naaz Patel, a Mumbai-based activist who is affiliated with the Avesta Foundation NGO.

Patel wanted demanded for the FlipKart owned e-commerce fashion company to delete the logo and also advanced her probe to take appropriate actions against the firm. She also took up this topic on social media through numerous forums and websites.

With this coming up as a case of absurd logos used by big corporate businesses, people on social media have started questioning another vacation rental company named, Airbnb for use of inappropriate brand logo resembling human genitalia. To this, one social media user on Twitter wrote, “Myntra has decided to revamp its logo after Naaz Patel filed a complaint with the current one, offensive to women. This reminds me of @Airbnb's new logo and its resemblance with human genitalia. But the company was resolute enough not to change it since 2014 and even went public.”

Naaz Patel’s continuous efforts to bring the matter into the attention of government authorities, cyber police, and with the help of social media in people too, it had all paid off well when Myntra decided to change its logo in a month’s time.

"We found that the logo was offensive in nature for women. Following the complaint, we sent an email to Myntra and their officials came and met us. The officials said they will change the logo in a month's time,” said DCP Rashmi Karandikar of Mumbai Police's Cyber Crime Department.

The DCP Rashmi Karandikar can be seen giving a statement to Mumbai based news agency Mid Day in the following video.

The online shopping app agreed to alter the logo on its website, its app and on packaging material after all the uproar surrounding the issue. Myntra has also released printing orders with a new branding for packaging products.

Myntra is among India's leading online stores for apparel and accessories. Myntra's annual winter revenues proved to be huge as it reported a 51 percent spike in website traffic in 2020.
