WHO Denies Coronil’s Approval, Says No Certification Granted

Coronil, the Paatanjali promoted medicine that claims to improve immunity from COVID-19 has had controversy regarding certification claims.

The news grabbed all the attention and hope after the national news channel News Nation reported Coronil’s approval from the WHO.

News 18 Anchor Kishor Anjawami appreciated Ramdev for the achievement. Deepak Chaurasia was seen applauding the Coronil’s approval “Baba Ramdev has proved that he does what he says. There was a lot of debate around Coronil when he had first spoken about it – is the Coronil kit an effective treatment for coronavirus? But today, it has received the approval of the WHO.”

Within minutes, the news was shared by India’s popular personalities and news channels.

The company has billed the Patanjali product as "first evidence-based medicine for COVID-19" for its launch on 19 February when Health Minister Harsh Vardhan and EU Minister Nitin Gadkari were also present.

Patanjali in its statement said “Coronil has received the Certificate of Pharmaceutical Product (CoPP) from the Ayush section of Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation as per the WHO certification scheme."

Rakesh Mittal, Patanjali’s lead executive claimed the efficacy of the Coronil alleging it is one of the finest products and will help India in fighting COVID-19. “Patanjali has made history in the field of Ayurveda as Coronil has been recognized by WHO as First Evidence Based Medicine for Corona," he tweeted.

Contradicting Patanjali’s statement later, the World Health Organization tweeted “WHO has not reviewed or certified the effectiveness of any traditional medicine for the treatment #COVID19."

After raised allegations on the inefficiency of the Coronil and its recognition from the WHO, Acharya Balkrishnan in a statement clarified the previous tweets. He said “We want to clarify to avoid confusion that our WHO GMP compliant COPP certificate to Coronil is issued by DCGI, Government of India. It is clear that WHO do not approve or disapprove any drugs. WHO works for building a better, healthier future for people all over the world.”
