Republic Day Parade 2021: All you need to know
A total of 32 tableaux, 17 of various states and UTs, nine of the ministries and six from the defence arm were seen going down the Rajpath on the 72nd Republic Day celebrations. Among them, the tableaux of Ladakh, the Union Territory that was created in 2019 after the abrogation of Article 370 and the bifurcation of Jammu & Kashmir, was included for the first time.
India celebrated its Republic Day with much pomp and show in a traditional manner. Following the COVID-19 precautionary protocols, the number of visitors were certainly less but the enthusiasm certainly seemed to be not. Keeping in mind social distancing, the size of marching contingents were reduced from 144 to 96. In addition, all the members of the tableaux contingents from various states, ministries and government departments underwent COVID testing.
The Supreme Commander of the defence forces Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other dignitaries including Vice President Venkaiah Naidu and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh were present at the event. The leaders paid their respect on the National War Memorial and proceeded towards the Rajpath in an ordinary manner.
The day also marked the 50th year of co-operation between the armies of the India and Bangladesh commencing during the liberation of the Bangladesh from East Pakistan. The Bangladeshi armed forces paraded on the ground in what can be described as one of the first's in history.
The event also featured the gallantry award distribution ceremony which included Paramvir Chakra, Mahavir Chakra and Vir Chakra. The peacetime highest gallantry awards included the Ashok Chakra, Kirti Chakra and Shaurya Chakra.

Shaurya Chakra:
1. Maj Anuj Sood, Guards, 21 RR (Posthumous)
2. RFN Pranab Jyoti Das, 6 Assam RIF
3. PTR Sonam Tshering Tamang, 4 PARA (SF)
The parade which began with the tune of "Swagatam" originally composed by Late Pandit Ravi Shankar witnessed the only exiting horse cavalry in the world, the 61st Cavalry, parading the ground with glory. Later, the only camel band exisiting in modern times, the Camel Regiment of the Border Security Force thrilled the spectators. It takes a total of 75 items to dress up each unit of the regiment.
The mechanized column was led by T-90 Bheeshma Main Battle Tanks. Flight Lt BhawanaKanth, one of the first three woman fighter pilot participated in the RepublicDay parade at Rajpath substantiating the motto: Touch the Sky With Glory.
Among the other highlights included the Electronic Warfare System "Samvijay", Artificial Intelligence based system "Shilka" apart from the show of tanks and missiles. The NSG contingent induced a feeling of goosebumps and euphoria as they marched confidently garnering cheers from the crowd.
Bhakti movement along with the eco-tribal initiatives of the state of Tripura for sustainable dependence on the environment were some of the major scenes. The Indian Sign Language was also portrayed in the tablelaux along with that of the CRPF with Sardar Patel in the background.
What really caught the attention of the spectators was the mesmerising "vertical charlie" manoeuvre by the newly inducted Rafale. The aircraft is the most advanced in asia and was seen alongside the much feared SU-30MKI which performed the famous "Trident" (trishul) manoeuvre. The Apache attack helicopters were also seen hovering just few hundred metres above the ground. Flying in from over Rashtrapati Bhavan the Mi-17 V5 helicopters in a Wineglass formation with the national flag cheered the onlookers.
The event ended with the national anthem and the ballons going up with a beautiful quote narrated by the Doordarshan from the former President of India, APJ Abdul Kalam from one of his most revered work "Wings of Fire".
