Sardar Vallabhai Patel, the ‘Iron Man of India’ died this day 70 years before.

As today marks the 70th death anniversary of Patel, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to his achievements and credited him for making India an independent country.

Modi wrote “Tribute to Iron Man Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who laid the foundation of a strong and prosperous India, on his death anniversary. The path shown by him will always inspire us to protect the unity, integrity and sovereignty of the country."

Sardar Patel was a leader of Indian National Congress. He was born on 31st October 1875 in Nadiad, Gujarat. The man is credited with uniting the 562 princely states of the pre-independent country and was also the first Home Minister and deputy PM of India.

After Narendra Modi, Congress also remembered him writing “When India attained Independence he became the Deputy Prime Minister and was responsible for the Home, States and the Information and Broadcasting portfolios. It was in this capacity that he was called upon to tackle the most intricate and baffling problem of the States' integration into the Union of India. And it is here that his tact, his powers of persuasion and his statesmanship came into full play.”

Twitter also remembers Patel as Indians around the globe tweeted about him, the great freedom fighter of India.
