On Saturday, President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the nation's hero, Mahatma Gandhi, on the 73rd anniversary of his death. Gandhi was shot dead in 1948 by Nathuram Godse on this day. The date of his death is remembered as Martyrs' Day.

The President said the country was grateful to him and that his values of tolerance, non-violence, simplicity, purity of means, and modesty should be accepted by all.

“On behalf of a grateful nation, my humble tributes to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi who embraced martyrdom this day. We should adhere to his ideals of peace, non-violence, simplicity, purity of means, and humility. Let us resolve to follow his path of truth and love,” said The President of India.

Paying tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on the anniversary of his demise, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said his ideas continue to inspire millions.

"Tributes to the great Bapu on his Punya Tithi. His ideals continue to motivate millions. On Martyrs' Day we recall the heroic sacrifices of all those great women and men who devoted themselves towards India's freedom and the well-being of every Indian," said The Prime Minister of India.

International Sand Artist & Padma Shri Awardee, Sudarsan Pattnaik said we should all embrace his message of peace and universal brotherhood. The Padma Shri Awardee captioned his message with a series of pictures from his sand art statue of Gandhi.

“Tribute to #MahatmaGandhi Ji on his Death Anniversary. Let's embrace his message of peace and universal brotherhood. I am sharing one of my SandArt,” said International Sand Artist & Padma Shri Awardee, Sudarsan Pattnaik.

“Humble tributes to Rashtrapita #MahatmaGandhi Ji on his Punya tithi. Bapu showed us the path of truth, nonviolence, and peace. We need to follow his ideals for nation’s unity and progress,” said Ashok Gehlot.

Congress MP K.C. Venugopal while mentioning one of Gandhi’s thoughts wrote, “An error does not become truth by reason of multiplied propagation, nor does truth become error because nobody sees it. Truth stands, even if there be no public support. It is self-sustained – Gandhiji.

My humble tributes to Bapu Ji on his 73rd death anniversary. #MahatmaGandhi.”

Law & Justice, Communications, Electronics & Information Technology Minister of India, Ravi Shankar Prasad wrote in his tweet, “My tribute to #MahatmaGandhi on his death anniversary. Let us all follow his steps of peace and harmony which will be our real tribute to Bapu.”

On January 30th, 1948, Mahatma Gandhi, the man who has had contributed to India’s independence from British colonial rule, was assassinated. Nathuram Godse, who was against Gandhi's idea of the partition (dividing India into various parts demographically), assassinated him.

In India, to honor those who laid down their lives for the republic, five days are proclaimed as Martyrs' Day. Of all, the first day is January 30, as in 1948 Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated.

Martyrs' Day is a moment to remind us of the fact that in the epic struggle, thousands of valiant warriors, some famous, many unknown, walked the thorny road of freedom battle for Indian independence.
