THE NEW UK VIRUS- CORONA B117, FIRST CASE IN FRANCE | FIND INDIA’S SITUATION

Situation in Europe

The first case of a new coronavirus variant that recently appeared in the UK has been confirmed by France, as per their Health Ministry.

More than 50 countries have been forced to place travel bans on the UK by the current outbreak of the virus, which scientists say is more infectious.

The first French case—found in a British resident who returned from London on 19 December—is asymptomatic and self-isolating at home in central France's Tours, the ministry said late on Friday.

They were checked on December 21 in a hospital and later found positive for the new type of Covid-19 strain.

The contact-tracing for the health practitioners who earlier took care of the patient is being carried out by the French health officials, the ministry said in a statement.

Similarly, all of their contacts who were seen as weak will be isolated, it added.

In addition to this first instance, some other positive tests "may suggest the B.1.1.7 variant are being sequenced" by the National Pasteur Institute's specialist laboratories, the statement added.

France's Ministry of the Interior said Thursday that "until at least January 6" restrictions on travel from the UK will remain.

For now, only inhabitants of France or the EU are eligible to cross from the United Kingdom provided they have a negative COVID-19 medical certificate that is less than three days old.

The new coronavirus strain was first identified last week in the United Kingdom. This virus is 70% more transmissible than other forms of SARS-CoV-2.The World Health Organisation said on Friday that eight European countries have already registered a new mutant form of coronavirus.

Situation in India

Numerous media reports shows for India that the British Virus has entered the Indian soil. Recently a man who returned from UK to India in the city of Pune was tested positive with the new strain of corona virus aka B117 SAR COV2.

“The man returned from UK in the second week of December and was tested positive among the group of 544 passengers tested for new corona virus on 17th December,” Indian Health Officials said on Friday.

The patient’s swab samples will be sent to the National Institute of Virology to verify again for the new covid-19 strain,” said Dr. Sanji Waware, Assistant Chief Health Officer, Municipal Corporation of Pune.
