Whatsapp's New Privacy Policy

"Respect for your privacy is coded into our DNA", this was once the part of whatsapp privacy policy but unfortunately not anymore. The Facebook-owned instant messaging platform is updating its policy which could have a significant impact on its users.

What has changed?

The end-to-end encryption remains intact, however there will be more integration with the social media platform Facebook. However, whatsapp now will be collecting data such as:
⦁    battery level
⦁    signal strength
⦁    mobile network (including phone number, operator info and IP address)
⦁    time zone
⦁    identifiers

All these information will be provided to Facebook and its related companies.

 No Banner Ads:

As of now, whatsapp has made clear that no such provisions would take place, however they may do so in the near future so one can expect pesky ads coming up on the mobile screen if it happens.

No Privacy in location:
Whatsapp has stated that even if the users do not use location based services, it would still collect data based on IP addresses and and phone area codes.

Deleting Account will no longer secure data:

If a user deletes his/her whatsapp account, it would not mean that the data would be secured. The data will still remain in the system and can be retrieved. A user would have to dig deeper to clear all the data shared.

Even interactions with Business accounts would be now different. The content that would be shared will be visible to third party apps and the accounts associated.
Twitter has been bustling with the news with criticisms pouring in:

Users have also pointed out telegram as an alternative.

A new notification would pop up on the smartphones and users would have to agree to the new terms and conditions or else their account will be deleted, however not the data. The new privacy policy comes as a surprise to many in a world where data protection is becoming increasingly important. Such a move is bound to raise eyebrows and compel people to look for other alternatives.
