Former US President Criticizes Senator Mitch McConnell
Further to the resounding criticism of the former US president after the prosecution trial, former US president Donald Trump urged Republican Senators Tuesday to dump Mitch McConnell as their Senate leader.
"The Republican Party can never again be respected or strong with political 'leaders' like Sen. Mitch McConnell at its helm," Trump said in a statement.
"Mitch is a dour, sullen, and unsmiling political hack, and if Republican Senators are going to stay with him, they will not win again."
The attack followed Saturday's McConnell announcement that, while he had voted to acquit Trump in his prosecution, nevertheless he was "practically and morally responsible" for the storm on the U.S. Capitol's January 6.
Earlier Trump shared a note criticizing McConnell.
Trump had accused McConnell of having losing control of the Senate by the Republicans, but had taken credit for his party's achievements at the House of Representatives, in his longer commentary on politics since he left the White House on January 20.
He acknowledged McConnell's winning six years as the Senate's leader, Kentucky, who has served 78 since 1984, and has held high power as the leading majority in the last 6 years.
"My only regret is that McConnell 'begged' for my strong support and endorsement before the great people of Kentucky in the 2020 election, and I gave it to him," said Trump.
Trump threatened to use his continued popularity within the republican basis to help any Republican candidate – November 2022 will be the next national election – who supports his agenda.
"Without my endorsement, McConnell would have lost, and lost badly."
