Government’s U-Turn Leaves London Schools In Conundrum
All primary schools in London will remain closed for the start of new term after the government changed its decision and bowed down to local protestors supporting ‘no-opening of schools’.
Initially the government announced closing of primary schools with 50 local authorities in London and South England and secondary schools and colleges for almost all the pupils till 18th January.
The London government bowed down to the local protestors who demanded to continue the closing of primary schools despite rising covid cases to protect the children.
The governments list however omitted other areas in London where covid cases are at peak. The leaders from these areas decided to go against the government and support any school willing to remain closed in the first few weeks of January.
The local authorities wrote to Education Secretary Gavin Williamson and complained about the government’s absurd plans. Nine local authorities along with Dr Mary Bousted, joint general secretary of the National Education Union demanded closing of primary schools in all areas.
“We are advised by leading counsel that the omissions from the list are unlawful on a number of grounds and can be challenged in court,” the letter added.
After strong agitation from local authorities, an emergency Cabinet meeting was held in which the government approved adding the remaining 10 London education authorities to the government’s “contingency areas”.
The move was criticized by local people as well and London stood against the government’s decision.
Education Secretary Gavin Williamson at the end of the meeting said “We must make this move to protect our country and the NHS. We will continue to keep the list of local authorities under review, and reopen classrooms as soon as we possibly can. The move means schools in Camden, the City of London, Greenwich, Hackney, Haringey, Harrow, Islington, Kingston upon Thames, Lambeth and Lewisham will be closed to most pupils from Monday until at least 18 January.”
The government’s U-turn however is questionable as it demeans students, pupils and others.
Kate Green, the shadow education secretary, said: “This is yet another government U-turn creating chaos for parents just two days before the start of term.
“Gavin Williamson’s incompetent handling of the return of schools and colleges is creating huge stress for parents, pupils, and school and college staff and damaging children’s education.”
