On February 13, Tibet Marks Its 108th Anniversary Of Independence | Tibetans In-Exile Celebrates The Day By Marching Global Protests Against China’s Annexation Of Tibet

Students for Free Tibet (SFT, India) organized a 'Raise Tibetan Nation Flag' event in Mcleodganj, Dharamshala on Saturday to commemorate the 108th anniversary of the declaration of Tibetan Independence Day.

"On the 13th of February, 1913 the 13th Dalai Lama declared Tibetan independence in the declaration of the "Proclamation of Independence" and since then Tibetans mark February 13th as an important day in Tibet's history to educate people on the significance of Tibet's independent past," said Rinzin Choedon, National Director of Students for Free Tibet (SFT).

“This is a symbolic day in the history of Tibetans all over the world. Celebrating Independence Day is a form of protest for any country, particularly those under illegal occupation, such as Tibet under Chinese occupation. For this reason, we are here to celebrate our Independence Day and project it as protest against China's illegal occupation,” added Rinzin.

The protestors also showed the treaty signed by representatives of the Republic of China, Tibet and the United Kingdom during the Shimla convention in 1913-1914 on the status of Tibet.

In a tweet that boosted the hashtag #FreedomForTibet as trending, Sir Vivian Richards, Former WI Cricketer and one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Century  from his Official Twitter handle, tweeted, “Happy Independence Day, Tibet’ Way to Go #FreedomForTibet.”

In a reply to Sir Vivian Richards, Major Gaurav Arya hits hard at Pakistan-China relationship by calling China as Pakistan’s master. He wrote, “Sir Vivian Richards wishes Tibet a Happy Independence Day and Pakistanis are up in arms. You can insult Pakistan and they won’t object...but say anything against China and Pakistanis get very upset. Such loyalty for their master, I am impressed. Wow.”

Political leader Arun Yadav shared a video message from former FTII Chairman Gajendra Singh denouncing Chinese government’s atrocities on the people of Tibet.

“Losar-la Tashi Delek! Happy Tibetan New Year! While celebrations might look a little different this year, we hope you all have a wonderful Losar. Our warmest and very best wishes for a happy, healthy and positive year from all of us at Tibet Relief Fund!,” said Satyadev Pachauri, BJP MP from Uttar Pradesh.

In March 1959, Tibet was invaded by China. Since 2009, in protest against China's suppression and annexation, over 155 Tibetans have set themselves on fire within Tibet.

In their fight for democracy and liberation, Students for a Free Tibet work in unity with the Tibetan people. They are a section network of young people and activists across the globe.
