Special CBI Court Verdict After 28 Years | Life Imprisonment to Catholic Priest Thomas and Nun Sephy for the Murder of Sister Abhaya

Today the special CBI court in Kerala’s Capital awarded life imprisonment to two accused, a catholic priest and a nun for the murder of 19-year-old sister Abhaya. The victim was murdered 28 years ago in the year 1992, and her body was found in well inside a convent in Kottayam, Kerala. The court has held its judgement on Tuesday which disclosed today.

The court also imposed a fine of INR Five Lakhs on Church’s Father Thomas Kottor (69) and Nun Sephy (55) each for the spoliation of evidence. The court further awarded Church’s Father Kottor an additional fine of INR One Lakh and Additional sentence of INR 7 Lakhs to both the accused. A 28-year-old long running case had to face drawbacks of time & evidence misplacing. There were a total of three accused in the case, apart from Kottar and Sephy, the third accused was Father Jose Poorthrikkayil who was discharged earlier in the case due to lack of evidence.

The sister Abhaya case has been one of India’s longest running and a high-profile murder mystery. The CBI had arrested the accused in November 2008, after almost 16 years of murder incident. Also during the murder case trials in the state court, 8 out of 49 prosecution witnesses mysteriously switched their statements.

As per the CBI report, Sister Abhaya had witnessed an intimate relation between the three, Church’s Father Kottor, Nun Sephy, and another Father Jose Poothrikkayil (the third accused of the case). The victim witnessed this on the night of 27th March, 1992 while going from her room to the hostel kitchen around 4:15 am to 5 am in the morning. The accused allegedly hit victim with a blunt weapon and later dumped her body into the well.

Earlier today, the special CBI Judge K Sanal Kumar sentenced Church Father Thomas Kottor and Nun Sephy under section 302 (Homocide) and Section (201) (Spoliation of Evidence) of Indian Penal Code (IPC).
