Tamil Nadu Cuts Metro Fares, New Fares Effective From 22nd February

Tamil Nadu CM Edappadi K Palaniswami announced a cut in tariffs for Chennai Metro Rail passengers before the coming State Assembly elections on Saturday.

The new CMRL fares shall enter into force in compliance with the state government's order on 22 February 2021 (Monday).

Accepting the demands of the people that the Metro Rail fares should be decreased in order to further enhance the patronage of CMRL service, the government has announced a cut in the fares for the benefit of the public, said Palaniswami.

Rs 20 lowers rates and now costs Rs 50 rather than previous Rs 70, for the entire length of Chennai Metro. The minimum Rs 10 fare remains unchanged, however.

Travelers would have to pay Rs 30 to travel between 5 and 12 kilometers. The fare is Rs 40 for up to 21 km, and the fare is capped at Rs 50, for journeys beyond 21 km.

A further 20 percent discount will be given to passengers who book their subway tickets by using the QR code or CMRL smart cards. On Sundays and public holidays passengers can now take 50% off their regular fares (not for daily passes).

For the four and a half kilometer phase-1 of CMRL(Chennai Metro rail Limited), commuters using unlimited days passes at Rs 100 are now going to have an unlimited day pass until Wimco Nagar. Likewise, passengers can receive monthly passes for the same amount as it is (Rs 2,500) at present and use them up to the newly extended line to Wimco Nagar, recently opened by PM Narendra Modi.

Narendra Modi had opened a CMRL Controlling Line from Washermanpet to Nagar. The metro line extends 54.15 km, covering the two corridors, from Wimco Nagar airport to Dr Puratchi Thalaivar Central Metro, one from St Thomas Mountain.
