Five Asteroids With Two Bigger Than Eiffel Tower To Pass By Earth Tomorrow On 6th January

Welcoming the New Year 2021 doesn’t seem to reach the expectations we had during the year 2020. Adding the new Covid-19 strains from South Africa & UK, another threat to humanity arise not from the inside of the world but space. According to NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies’ (CNEOS) latest close approach data, five strange asteroids are all set to mark a close encounter with our planet on 6th January.

Among the five, three of the asteroids are insignificantly small, thus poses no threat even if directly heading to Earth. However, the remaining two Asteroids are larger than the Paris’ Eiffel Tower, so yes they have much bigger threats but only if projected towards Earth. These larger asteroids are named by the CNEOS as ‘2016 CO247’ and ‘2008 AF4’ owning estimated diameters in the range of 210-470 meters and 310-680 meters, respectively. If any of these were to collide with Earth, it will produce an equivalent force of 25 to 50 Megatons, similar to few of the biggest nuclear bombs available to the Mankind.

The NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) released a Close Approach Data (CAD) report as below.

As per the reports, 5 asteroids of varying size and speeds are traveling a trajectory that predicts their close encounter with the planet Earth. The approach date being 6th of January, where the first asteroid (2021 AC) will pass closer to the earth around 03:27 am in the morning. All the asteroids will pass at varying projected times and does not pose any imminent threat until their predicted trajectories are not altered.

While the two larger asteroids have become the centre of talk, we shouldn’t forget that speed is a factor that could play major role in determining threat level for any object. The smallest asteroid, though considered less harmful but scientist suggest that any asteroid of size similar to a commercial truck when traveling in the skies at a speed of 12 Km per second (43,200 Kmph) would be nothing less than a nuclear bomb at Hiroshima. Therefore, the smallest asteroid ‘2021 AJ’ too poses a threat to us, if things go against our fates.
