INDIAN PREMIER LEAGUE 2021 AUCTIONS | SREESANTH’S JOLLY RESPONSE ON NOT MAKING IT TO FINAL LIST
Indian Cricket Team’s former fast bowler, S Sreesanth had high hopes from IPL auctions with his name kept in the list of registered players. A total of 1114 players had applied for the 8 IPL franchises.
The final list of players who made it to these IPL teams was announced by the BCCI on Thursday night, unfortunately Sreesanth name was missing from it.
Before his sporting return, Sreesanth had to wait for almost seven years to apply for these auctions, as he had been banned for seven years for an alleged involvement in the IPL 2013 spot-fixing case. Sreesanth was arrested from a hotel in 2013 along with his then IPL franchise (Rajasthan Royals) teammates Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila based on the suspicions over match fixing.
During the initial BCCI trial, Sreesanth was awarded life ban from cricket, including Indian Premier League matches. Sreenath had challenged BCCI’s decision on life-ban in the apex court. In March 2019, the Indian Supreme Court changed the BCCI’s judgment by revoking the life-ban, limiting it to seven years which ended last year in 2020.
Sreenath was considered to be a strong contender among rest of the players with his convincing track record in the game of cricket. He has been the part of Indian cricket team that won two World cups, ICC T20 World Cup in 2008 and the 2011 ICC ODI World Cup under the captaincy of MS Dhoni.
At times, Sreenath had shared his desire to play for team India once again. In the recently finished tournament of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he played for his state, Kerala, picking up four wickets.
The 38-year-old had established his starting price at INR 75 lakh and was confident that he would be selected by one of the eight franchises. Apparently, it wasn't to be.
A total of 1114 players had applied for the bidding, of which the applicants were shortlisted by the franchises and the list had been pruned. “However for some reasons, Sreesanth couldn’t attract the franchises,” said a franchise official, anonymously.
Although Sreesanth had a wonderful cricket track record with 27 Tests, 53 ODIs and 10 International T20 matches grabbing a total of 169 wickets.
Alongside a total of 164 Indian players, 125 are foreign players who will be up for grabs at the mini auction scheduled on February 18 in Chennai.
In the top bracket, the highest reserve price is INR 2 crore. The top ten strongest contenders include two Indian players, Harbhajan Singh and Kedar Jadhav, and eight international players, Glenn Maxwell, Shakib Al Hasan, Steve Smith, Sam Billings, Moeen Ali, Jason Roy, Mark Wood & Liam Plunkett.
Meanwhile, despite losing out on the final list of cricketers, Sreesanth has not shown much indications of resentment by any manner. On his Instagram account, he posted a video where he voiced appreciation to his fans and associates for being with him in the tough times.
