Hanging Bridge Collapse in Gujarat Causes Fear in the Country; Receives 61% Negative Sentiments from the Audiences Online

As more bodies were pulled from the Machchhu River by rescuers on Monday, the death toll from the collapse of the Morbi suspension bridge in Gujarat reached 130, a police official reported.

Approximately 240 kilometres from Gandhinagar, in the Gujarati town of Morbi, a century-old suspension bridge over the Machchhu River fell on Sunday evening, according to officials. Just four days prior, the bridge had reopened after having been shuttered for approximately seven months for repairs.

At least 60 of the 79 injured patients admitted to the Morbi Civil Hospital, according to Chief District Medical Officer P K Didhrejiya, were in critical condition.

Harsh Sanghavi, Minister of State for Home, who hurried to Morbi, estimated that there were 150 persons on the bridge when the tragedy occurred. Several women and children were reportedly on the "hanging bridge" when it collapsed, sending them into the lake below, according to accounts. The event happened at around 6:30 pm while a large number of people were strolling on the bridge, one of Morbi's top tourist destinations.
