Nation Remembers Chandrashekhar Azad on his death anniversary
The Indian revolutionary who reorganised the Hindustan Republican Association under its new name of Hindustan Socialist Republican, Chandrashekhar Azad died on 27th February 1931 at an early age of 24 leaving the seeds of the Indian Independence Movement.
The Vice-President of India Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu took to his official social media handle twitter to pay his tributes to the fallen leader:
Netizens have already taken to the social media platform twitter to express their tribute on his 90th death anniversary:
Chandra Shekhar Azad was killed in 1931 in Alfred Park, Allahabad after an associate allegedly betrayed him. For quite some time, he held the well-armed police that circled him at, single-handedly with a small pistol and a few cartridges. Azad was left with just one bullet, he shot himself in the head and lived up to his resolve that he would never be arrested and dragged to jail.
Here are some of the facts of the beloved and inspirational hero of Indian Independence Movement:
⦁ Young Chandra Shekhar Azad was fascinated by and drawn to the great national upsurge of the non-violent, non-cooperation movement of 1920-21 under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi.
⦁ When he was arrested and produced before the magistrate, he gave his name as 'Azad', his father's name as 'Swatantra' and his residence as 'prison'. The magistrate sentenced him to 15 lashes of flogging. The title of Azad stuck thereafter from that day.
⦁ He was involved in the Kakori Conspiracy (1926), the attempt to blow up the Viceroy's train (1926), the Assembly bomb incident, the Delhi Conspiracy, the shooting of Saunders at Lahore (1928) and the Second Lahore conspiracy.
⦁ Azad used to fondly recite a Hindustani couplet, his only poetic composition was: 'Dushman ki goliyon ka hum saamna karenge. Azad hi rahein hain, azad hi rahenge'
In his memory, Alfred Park is now named as Chandrashekhar Azad Park.
Chandrashekhar Azad's legacy continues to inspire the young generation and would do so for the years to come.
