January 23 will be now celebrated as "Parakram Diwas"

In a recent notification released by the Government of India, Subhash Chandra Bose's birthday on the 23rd of January will be celebrated as Parakram Diwas.

Social Media Platforms like Twitter instantly started to trend with the proclamation:

Ahead of Netaji’s 125th birth anniversary, the Union Ministry of Culture said, “In order to honour and remember Netaji’s indomitable spirit and selfless service to the nation, the Government of India has decided to celebrate his birthday on the 23rd of January every year as Parakram Diwas to inspire people of this country especially the youth and to infuse in them a spirit of patriotic fervour.”

Earlier this month, an 85-member panel, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was formed to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

The committee will decide on the activities for a year-long commemoration, beginning on January 23, 2021, a statement from the Ministry of Culture read. The committee will be headed by Home Minister Amit Shah comprising of experts, historians, authors, family members of Netaji and INA associates, will further decide how to pay tribute to Netaji's contribution to India’s freedom struggle.

Last year in December, the Modi government de-classified all records related to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and Azad Hind Fauj and placed them in the National Archives of India, Minister of State of Culture and Tourism as per the statement issued by Prahlad Patel. A total of 304 declassified records/files have been transferred to National Archives of India for permanent retention. Out of 304 flies, 303 files are already uploaded on the Netaji web portal. The National Archives of India is the custodian of declassified files and records of the Government of India. Earlier, in 1997 the National Archives of India had received 990 declassified files pertaining to the Azad Hind Fauj from the Ministry of Defence.

It is noteworthy that his contributions have been generally ignored by the historians and thus fail to make it to the minds of the public. Furthermore, his disagreement with the Gandhain principles further put him in the dark spot. Therefore, such an initiative by the government must be welcomed and should be seen as a glorification of long forgotton legacy of a populist leader of our independence movement.
