Nidhi Razdan Phished !

Phishing attacks are common. A sad reality of the world dominated by the internet. Going strictly be defination, phishing is a type of social engineered attack often used to steal user data, most importantly the login credentials and bank credit card numbers. It occurs when an attacker, masquerading as a trusted entity, dupes a victim into opening an email, instant message, or text message. Former NDTV journalist Nidhi Razdan tweeted on the morning of the 15th of January that she too had been a target of such an attack:

The message which went viral was posted by her on her twitter platform:

But it seems like twitter has taken a jibe on her issue with some showing the hypocricy of her statement:

It seems that the netizens are not completely wrong. A call from a  prestigious institution like Harvard needs to be checked, verified and Nidhi, who is a seasoned journalist should have immediately realised.

She stated: "At first, I had dismissed these anomalies as being reflective of the new normal being dictated by the pandemic, but recently the representations being made to me were of an even more disquieting nature. As a result, I reached out to senior authorities at Harvard University for clarity. Upon their request, I shared some of the correspondence that I believed I had received from the University".

She further went ahead to add: "After hearing from the University, I have now learnt that I have been the victim of a sophisticated and coordinated phishing attack. I did not, in fact, receive an offer by Harvard University to join their faculty as an Associate Professor of Journalism. The perpetrators of this attack used clever forgeries and misrepresentations to obtain access to my personal data and communications and may have also gained access to my devices and my email/social media accounts".
Nidhi has also informed the police regarding the same and has even filed a complaint, She also informed the authorities at Harvard University regarding the same.

Even during the pandemic, a series of coronavirus related phishing attacks saw a rise by over 600 per cent !

They have become the greatest threat to cyber security in recent times. Specific hacker communities and freelancers design these to achieve their nefarious objectives. Henceforth, many organizations and banking companies have urged users in the recent times to remain cautious.

A lot of people have a habit of not updating their operating systems on a regular basis which also contributes to the efficieincy of these attacks. It has been advised multiple times by the tech giants to keep the systems updated and install the regular security patche updates to keep your computing systems running safe.
