Why is #DelhiAirport trending ?

"Dilli ki sardi" is as famous as the national capital itself. Dense fog engulfed parts of Delhi and the surrounding regions in the early morning of 16th January leading to poor visibility in several areas. However, this is not new to Delhi which faces similar conditions every year.

Owing to this situation, the Delhi airport issued an advisory asking only CAT IIIA and CATIII B compliant aircraft and pilots to operate. The Delhi airport tweeted through its official twitter handle:

However, no major delays or cancellations were reported.

According to the IMD, in case of dense fog, the visibility is between 51 and 200 metres, moderate at 201 and 500 metres, and shallow at 501 and 1,000 metres. The air conditions in the national capital have also deteriorated with AQI standing at 492.

What is CAT III A and CAT III B ?

CAT III A & B are  Instrument Landing System (ILS). This helps planes land during dense fog and inclement weather conditions when visibility is low. A pilot has to have certifications to fly an aircraft during these conditions.

Another reason as to why #DelhiAirport is trending is due to the Golden Giveaway offer in which winners get to take away one gold coin by answering a puzzle:

The tweet gathered significant impressions and many netizens seem to be participating in it with much enthusiasm and zeal.

The airport authority has indulged in similar giveaways in the past as a part of their marketing strategy. Airports are not just departure/arrival points but have now become important centres of trade and commerce which demands techniques to woo customers. Delhi airport took over Mumbai in the year 2015 in terms of the busiest airport in the country.
