Coolie NO.1, the remake of a remake| Checkbrand’s Movie Review

Coolie No 1 Cast: Varun Dhawan, Sara Ali Khan, Paresh Rawal, Javed Jaffery, Rajpal Yadav, Johny Lever, Manoj Joshi

Movie Director: David Dhawan

Coolie No 1 movie rating: Two Stars

The men behind the original Coolie No 1, Director David Dhawan, and producer Vashu Bhagnani, spare no effort to confirm the burial of the former: 1995 starring Govinda-Karisma Kapoor was best left alone.

Twenty-five years have passed since one of the superhits which established Govinda's career as a comic hero was delivered by the producer and director pair. The actor is not available to bear the weight of the remake on his shoulders, nor is Kader Khan available for his dialogue to liven up Rumi Jaffery's script. Their absence, though, is not the only reason this Coolie No 1 is a little dull show.

The movie has more colors and slickness, but it's purely shallow with all its shine. Flashier and louder is the new edition. The apparent expectation is that the sheer pointlessness of the exercise would be papered over and drowned out. But no matter what the director and his son, Varun Dhawan, the lead actor, try, this coolie number 1 is anything but ‘A Number One’. No patch could be kept on the 1995 Coolie No 1. This is the 2020 Coolie No 1, released on Amazon Prime Video.

The script of this film remains unchanged, albeit a rehash that scraps the bottom of the barrel and ends up with little that might explain its existence.

This movie is a reboot of a remake, so it's not shocking that Coolie No 1- “Main toh raste se jaa raha tha” and “Husn hai suhana” are both remixed versions of the two chartbusters. There's a shot of Varun and Sara dancing on the upper deck of a pink double-decker bus in the first song, with nuns swaying behind them to the beat. What does it imply? We’ve got no clue. And this film doesn't either.

The time has long passed for constructed-on-paper-plots. Watching passable characters go through jerky sequences and bad laugh tracks is frustrating. You are brought right back to the OG by Varun and Sara dancing to the already famous songs ('Tujhko mirchi lagi toh main kya karoon'). Paresh Rawal is the only one who makes a meal out of his character, played in the original by the inimitable Kader Khan. A light touch is used by his heavy-handed dad, which is just what's required in this kind of brainless comedy. Under his papa's baton, Varun Dhawan fared even better. And unfortunately, as vacuous as the story is the sprightly Sara Ali Khan.

In these gloomy moments, we can do so with humor, but not like this, with nil wit, with no flair.
