Pellissery’s Jallikattu is now out of the Oscars
Jallikattu by filmmaker Lijo Jose Pellissery, India's official entry at the 93rd Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Feature category, is out of the Oscars contest.
The Malayalam-language film is not part of the shortlist of 15 features revealed on Wednesday by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) that will be vying for a spot in the final five.
On March 15, the final nominations for the Oscars will be announced.
Jallikattu was announced as India’s nominations for the Oscar on 25th November 2020.
Jallikattu is based on Hareesh's Maoist short story and stars Antony Varghese, Chemban Vinod Jose, Sabumon Abdusamad and Santhy Balachandran.
On September 6, 2019, at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival, the film had its première and earned widespread critical acclaim.
At the 50th International Film Festival of India in 2019, Pellissery also won the trophy for best director.
Films from 93 countries participated in the Oscars this year and the results for final nominations will be announced on March 15th, 2021.
Another Round by Thomas Vinterberg, starring Mads Mikkelson, has made it to a shortlist that also includes Dear Comrades of Andrei Konchalovsky! (Russia), Charlatan (Czech Republic) by Agnieszka Holland and two documentaries, The Mole Agent from Chile and Collective from Romania.
Quo Vadis, Aida, are the other contenders? (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Two of Us (France), La Llorona (Guatemala), Better Days (Hong Kong), Sun Children (Iran), Kings' Night (Ivory Coast), I'm No Longer Here (Mexico), Hope (Norway), A Sun (Taiwan) and The Man Who Sold His Skin (Tunisia).
Zoya Akhtar's Gully Boy made it to Oscars in the year 2019.
The 93rd Academy Awards, which have been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic from their normal February date, will be held on April 25.
