Richa Chadha’s ‘Madam Prime Minister’ Is Bhim Sena’s New Target

Richa Chadha’s movie ‘Madam Prime Minister’ is on the verge of release but it has already been in the news after none other than Bhima Sena yet again participated in the comment section of the movie poster.

The movie poster has been receiving backlash from the supporters of the Akhil Bharatiya Sena in which the actor is seen holding a broomstick. The Sena believes she is portraying Dalit leader Mayawati and the movie is aimed to malign her status in the country.

While many agreed on terms that holding the broomstick signifies stereotyping Dalits, others condemn the movie makers for selecting such a sensitive topic.

While the poster was released last month, the controversies still prevail with Bhim Sena chief threatening Richa Chadha for being a part of such movie.

After the movie poster was released, Richa apologised for hurting people’s sentiments and also took back the poster but the matter augmented when Bhim Sena Chief officially threatened her.

She wrote “This film was learning experience for me, for us all. The promotions were no different. The first poster that was released faced severe criticism, rightly so. What to me (and my privileged eyes) was a mere prop used by my character in a scene, came across as a stereotypical portrayal of Dalits for many of our people. As an actor, I receive the communication for posting, complete with the copy, handles and hashtags”.

“Needless to say, I have no role in the designing of promotional materials. By saying this, I am not throwing the makers under the bus. They realised this inadvertent error and took this criticism in their stride. They responded immediately by retracting the objectionable poster and by releasing a new poster the very next day. It was a regrettable and a completely unintentional oversight, not a deliberate insinuation. We are sorry. Our heart is in the right place. Hopefully, you will see that for yourself when you watch the film.”

In a facebook post, the Sena chief called to cut her tongue and also summed up with prize money for people who brings her severed tongue.

He said “Jo bhai ya behen Richa Chadha ki zubaan kaat kar ke le ke aayega. Usse hum Baba Ambedkar sahab ki Rs 2 crore ki shield se sammanit karenge. Jo Subhash Kapoor (director) ko leke aayega humare saamne… hum Subhash Kapoor ko nanga karke sadak ke upar parade karwayenge. Agar goli bhi maarni padi na Bahujan Samaj ki raksha ke liye … behen Mayawati ke samman ke liye…. hum peeche nahi hatange. Richa Chadha, aapko goli se uda diya jayega dhyaan rakhna.

The actor who apologised earlier had also complained she is receiving death threats and people are mocing her of her poster. She further said she is also threatened for breaking her windows and burning her house.

Responding to the threats, the actor shared a post saying “we are not scared”.

Supporting Richa, the fierce actor Swara Bhaskar asked dalit women, Dalit feminists, Ambedkarites and others to support Richa’s role and voice against the threats.

Swara tweeted “This is absolutely shameful & to be condemned in no uncertain terms. You can have ideological issues & problems with a film but this is criminal intimidation & incitement to violence. Ambedkarites, Dalit feminists & just sane people- stand up & call this out! @RichaChadha #NotOk."

The movie is about to release on 22nd January 2021 and is directed by Subhash Kapoor. The movie also stars Manav Kaul, Saurabh Shukla and Akshay Oberoi.
