US envoy Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan created storm, China summons
US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s plans to visit Taiwan has created a storm in the South East Asian region, especially in China. After a week-long uncertainty, Nancy Pelosi flew to Taiwan on an Air Force passenger jet on Tuesday. She is the highest-ranking US official visiting Taiwan in the last 25 years, even after China’s warning against the visit.
China summoned an American official on Wednesday in Beijing that lodged a stern protest against her, after hours Mrs. Pelosi spoke to the Taiwanese Parliament. China warned that the US would “pay a price” for its “mistakes” and moreover, warned the Washington to stop using the issue of Taiwan to criticize China in any way.
Meantime, Pelosi said in a press meeting in Taipei, Taiwan that the US does not want anything to happen to Taiwan by force. “We want Taiwan to always have freedom and security, we are not backing away from that,” she said. Pelosi also said, “Now, more than ever, America’s solidarity with Taiwan is crucial, that’s the message we bring in today.” while speaking at an event alongside Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen.
Pelosi’s visit stretched up tensions between China and the United States because China claims Taiwan as part of its territory, and the tussle between Taiwan and China has become intense since China sent its air jets into the territory of Taiwan last year. Additionally, China announced military retaliation, to which Taiwan’s military responded that they have the ability to defend national security.
"As China uses its soft-power in order to gain support, we have to talk about Taiwan in terms of its technological advancement and show people Taiwan's courage to become more democratic," she said. "Demonstration of democracy offers a strong contrast to what's happening in mainland China. No more evidence is needed on what happened in Hong Kong, one country two systems didn't happen. We don't want anything to happen to Taiwan by force," she added.
Meanwhile the standoff between China and Taiwan, the social media accounts of US envoy Nancy Pelosi were booming with comments and reactions from all over the globe.
