Happy Birthday Atal Ji | A Tribute to Our Beloved PM – Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee

“I have a vision of India - an India free of hunger and fear, an India free of illiteracy and want”, said Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the former Indian Prime Minister.

Today is the birth anniversary of India’s highest civilian award Bharat Ratna awardee and three-times former Indian Prime Minister, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He is one of the most admired Indian Politician, was born in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh on 25th December 1924. He joined Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in the year 1939 and became a full member by 1947. A son to a school teacher, Mr. Vajpayee was a brilliant scholar and famous poet.

On his birthday and the good governance day, we present you with one of his poems written about the character of India as a Nation.

Translation of the above poem in English would be as follows:

“India is not a piece of land,

It is a living patriot.

Himalaya is the head, Kashmir is the crown,

Punjab and Bengal are two huge shoulders.

The Eastern and Western Ghats are two huge thighs,

Kanyakumari is its feet, Ocean fortitude its feet.

This is the land of sandalwood, the land of greetings,

It is the land of libation, it is the land of the offering.

Its every soil grain is Shankar (Lord Shiva),

Its every point is Gangajal (Water of Ganges).

If we live, we will live for this,

If we die, we will die for this.”

He was drafted in RSS in the year 1951, along with Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya, to serve with the precursor of his BJP, the Bharatiya Jana Sangh. From March 19, 1998, to May 22, 2004, and for a brief time in 1996, Mr. Vajpayee served as Prime Minister. The Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in India, was awarded to Mr. Vajpayee in 2015.

He was a brilliant poet, an excellent orator, and a wonderful politician who was loved by all political fronts in India and abroad. He was the go-to person for any political advice in the Indian polity. Politicians of opposition use to take his opinion on every matter of discussion in or outside the parliament.

Mr. Vajpayee was the only politician who led the largest coalition government and that was possible only because of his charismatic behavior and his captivating speeches about nation-building. Indians worldwide see him as an inspiration and a legend for patriotic believes. When once asked about why he did not marry, he generously replied “I could not marry a girl whom I had liked in my younger days and then later I decided not to marry and give service to the nation.”

Today we miss our legend, today we miss the man who gave selfless service to his nation, a man who did not marry, a man who did not have any family of his own but called this whole nation as his one big Family. So today we miss our ‘Family Member’, today we miss our astonishing Atal Ji.

“Salutations to former honorable Prime Minister  Atal Bihari Vajpayee on his birth anniversary. Under his visionary leadership, he took the country to unprecedented heights of development. His efforts to build a strong and prosperous India will always be remembered,” said Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India.

“I have a vision of India - an India free of hunger and fear, an India free of illiteracy and want.- #AtalBihariVajpayee I pay my respectful tributes to the great visionary, the man of masses, former Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ji on his birth anniversary today,”  said M Venkaiah Naidu, The Vice President of India.

“Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Ombirla Kota, Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh and Home Minister Shri Amit Shah  pay floral tribute at ‘Sadaiv Atal’ on former PM #AtalBihariVajpayee's 96th birth anniversary,” tweeted official Twitter handle of BJP.
