HUGE SETBACK FOR BJP IN PUNJAB CIVIC BODY ELECTIONS | CONGRESS DOES THE MAJOR SWEEP | AAP, SAD FAR BEHIND
The counting of votes for the Punjab Municipal Election Result 2021 of eight municipal corporations and 109 municipal councils and Nagar Panchayats was started by the Punjab State Election Commission (PSEB) and that ended at 4 PM on Wednesday. Congress is clearly in the lead, while AAP and SAD are struggling to take second place. Developments so far indicate that this year's municipal polls are a setback for the BJP, affected by the large-scale farmers' union strike.
After the unrest of the farmers and the split between SAD and BJP, this is the first election result. In some regions, the poll results are also seen as a reflection to the farm laws implemented by the Centre and a big predictor of political headwinds in the state ahead of next year's Assembly elections.
Independents too have done well in the elections, in addition to Congress, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which had launched a strong campaign, performed below estimates.
The Congress, did well in all three regions of Punjab, swept six of the state's eight municipal corporations.
Of the 50 seats in Abohar, the party won 49, 43 in Bathinda, 41 in Hoshiarpur and 43 in Kapurthala. It also made major breakthroughs into Pathankot, ruled by the BJP, scooping 37 of 50 seats. With 35 seats, it did well in Batala too.
In two wards of Mohali Municipal Corporation, repolling is underway, the results of which will be declared on Thursday.
The only civic body where Congress did not do too well was Moga, bagging 20 out of 50 seats and where SAD won 15 seats.
President Sunil Jakhar of the State Congress declined to comment on the figures, saying they are still being recorded.
