AUSTRALIAN OPEN | NAOMI OSAKA AND SERENA WILLIAMS, EASY WIN FOR TWO

On the first morning at the Australian Open, three-time Grand Slam champions Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams took the court and easily advanced into Monday's second round.

While Osaka, who won the championship two years ago in Melbourne, played the season opener at the Rod Laver Arena and defeated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-1, 6-2, Serena Williams had an unsteady one-game Australian Open start.

Williams swept 10 straight games after narrowly falling behind and defeated Laura Siegemund 6-1, 6-1 on Monday's first day of the tournament.

The win indicated the start of the new attempt by Williams for a streak tying 24th major title, and she flexed her biceps as she left the court.

‘This was a good arena start’- Serena said, "It's definitely good. At a Grand Slam, I'm pretty good at pacing myself." Williams wore a vibrant one-legged cat-suit, and her game appeared even more glamorous. On her serve, she missed just nine points and struck 16 winners.

For the first time since 2019, her sister, Venus, won a Grand Slam match. The elder Williams played in her 21st Australian Open, defeating Kirsten Flipkens 7-5, 6-2.

At 40, Venus is the oldest woman in the competition this year and just the sixth player to participate at the Australian Open in her forties.

Three-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka, who claimed the Melbourne championship two years ago, defeated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-1, 6-2 in the opening game at Rod Laver Arena.

This year's Grand Slam season's opening tournament began after a three-week break due to the corona virus outbreak.

“Physically I feel like everyone, their bodies are shocked, coming in and playing so suddenly after such a long break. I think we're all getting used to it and everyone is just happy to be here, including Williams sisters,” said Osaka.

On the tournament site, up to 30,000 fans will be allowed, nearly 50 percent of capacity, but seats were largely empty on a cool day for the early matches.
