Relocating ‘Rohingya Refugees’ still in flux of political impasses

Hardeep Singh Puri, the Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, tweeted on Wednesday that India had always welcomed people who had sought sanctuary there.

He then declared that all Rohingya refugees would be relocated to EWS flats in the Bakkarwala neighbourhood of east Delhi.

Following this tweet, the Union Home Ministry clarified that no such action had been taken. The MHA has retracted the statement made by Mr. Puri in which he hailed the "landmark" move to relocate 1,100 Rohingya refugees in Delhi into apartments.

Later, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) issued a clarification in which it was stated: "...It is clarified that the MHA has not given any directives to supply EWS flats to Rohingya illegal migrants at Bakkarwala in New Delhi."

Further, the Union Home Ministry said that there were no plans to relocate Rohingya residents of Delhi to EWS apartments.

Many BJP members, members of the greater Sangh Parivar, and proponents of Hindu nationalism had expressed shock and dismay over Puri's tweets, which ran counter to the party's and the government's well-known stance on the Rohingya crisis.

On Wednesday, the BJP said that undocumented immigrants pose a threat to national security and that the Modi administration would never budge on the matter.
