Checkbrand rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Checkbrand verdict: A onetime entertainer with social message of true loopholes in the Indian government systems.

The supreme value of the 'sarkari kaagaz' is at the core of this picturesque tale: if you are sad enough to be marked dead on government documents, no amount of shouting and swearing will help you come back.

Kaagaz is the real story of the courage and prestige of Lal Bihari, who took 18 years to claim he was legally alive.

It takes a strong spine to make a biopic of a non-so-famous person who has spent 18 years of life battling Indian bureaucracies and showing that he's really much alive. Best remembered for his work in movies such as Tere Naam, Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai and Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain, Satish Kaushik could have made a great rebound only if the film could've been made without loopholes.

The circumstances of Kaagaz are fascinating, particularly when Lal Bihari (portrayed by Pankaj Tripathi) discovers that his relatives have legally marked him dead on the government papers to take the patch of property under his name. Lal Bihari races through the case, pursuing government officers, attorneys, and even bribed policemen to have him arrested so that he may claim to be legitimately alive. Unfortunately, Kaagaz suffers from a lack of composition, bad editing and needless placement of songs.

Though Kaagaz appeared obsolete based on the production standards and dialogues, the visual effects, sound effects and art direction were all right to give the village a natural look. Pankaj Tripathi is phenomenal actor. Once again, the wonderful actor proves that he can play any part with grace and poise. He's definitely one of the very few performers to go deeper into any character. Other actors too performed well, including Monal Gajjar, Satish Kaushik, Mita Vashishth, Brijendra Kala, Amar Udhayay, Neha Chauhan.

All in all, Kaagaz can be enjoyed once, kudos to the fascinating story of the courageous Lal Bihari, played superbly by Pankaj Tripathi.

The movie is produced under the banner of Salman Khan Films (SKF) by superstar actor Salman Khan. To watch the complete movie from the comfort and safety of your home, you can log on to OTT platform called Zee5 Premium.
