SC Advices To Practice Screening of Content On OTT platform

Tandav, the Amazon Prime web series inculpated of disrespecting Hindu gods and escalating communal hatred has again apologised to the government.

Tandav director Ali Abbas Zafar shared the apology and said “The web series Tandav is a work of fiction and any resemblance to acts and persons and events is purely coincidental. The cast and crew did not have any intention to offend the sentiments of any individual, caste, community, race, religion or religious beliefs or insult or outrage any institution, political party or person, living or dead. The cast and crew of Tandav take cognizance of the concerns expressed by the people and unconditionally apologize if it has unintentionally hurt anybody’s sentiments.”

Amidst the controversial Tandav row, the Supreme court has advised OTT content screening to ensure digital content must be audited before being displayed on OTT platforms.

SC further stated the OTT platforms even show pornographic materials, thus it is necessary to have a mechanism to administer the programs showing uneven content.

Justice Ashok Bhushan said while hearing an appeal by India head of Amazon Aparna Purohit said “Now watching movies on internet and OTT has become common. We are of the view there must be some screening. A balance has to be struck as some OTT platforms are also showing pornographic materials on their platforms”.

Aparna Purohit challenged the Allahabad High Court’s order against ‘Tandav’. Her lawyer Mukul Rohatgi argued in Supreme court about her innocence and claimed her non-participation in producing the show, she being just an employee and not the producer.

The High court previously rejected the anticipatory bail plea and denied any protection from arrest to Ms Purohit.

The court rejecting Purohit’s protection said “such people make the revered figures of the religion of majority community source of earning money in a most brazen manner taking benefit of the liberal and tolerant tradition of the country.”

The court also talked about the arrest of Munawar Faruqui, the comedian arrested for commenting on Hindu gods.

UP Police filed a complaint against the nine-episode series “Tandav” claiming the series led to disrespecting Hindu gods and hurting Hindu sentiments.

Amazon hitherto apologised for the show stating “Amazon Prime Video again deeply regrets that viewers considered certain scenes to be objectionable in the recently launched fictional series Tandav. This was never our intention, and the scenes that were objected to were removed or edited when they were brought to our attention. We respect our viewers’ diverse beliefs and apologise unconditionally to anyone who felt hurt by these scenes,” read a section of the statement. Our teams follow company content evaluation processes, which we acknowledge need to be constantly updated to better serve our audiences. We will continue to develop entertaining content with partners, while complying with the laws of India and respecting the diversity of culture and beliefs of our audiences.”

Penned down by Guarav Solanki, the film stars Saif Ali Khan, Sunil Grover, Twinkle Khanna, Sunil Grover, Gauahar Khan, Md Zeeshan Ayyub and Dimple Kapadia.
