World Soil Day 2020

World Soil Day (WSD) is celebrated annually on the 5th of December. With every year there comes a different theme for campaigning and this year’s theme for WSD is ‘Keep soil alive, Protect soil biodiversity.’ First, let’s dive into the history of WSD and why setting this day was a precious call to make aware the unaware parts of human society.

Overall the aim is to raise awareness of the importance of maintaining healthy ecosystems and the well-being of every being on this planet.  It focuses on increasing challenges in soil management and to fight soil biodiversity losses. WSD also addresses campaigns that encourage governments, organizations, communities, and individuals around the world to commit to improving soil health. This year’s campaign ‘Keep soil alive, Protect soil biodiversity’ urges mankind to pay attention to the workforce below the soil which spans from tiny bacteria to millipedes and all to earthworms, the list of these organisms is endless. They work 24/7/365 days to keep our soil enriched with nutrients. These nutrients make our foods much healthier to eat.

World Soil Day doesn’t just focus on attention to healthy soil but it also advocates for sustainable management of the soil resources. This day of celebrating soil was initiated first in the year 2002 by the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS). Under the leadership of the Kingdom of Thailand, Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) has supported the formal establishment of WSD. UN general assembly responded by designating 5th December 2014 as the first official world soil day. The date of 5th December was chosen as it is the official birthday of Thailand’s former King Late H.M Bhumibol Adulyadej.

Soil is a living resource and home to more than 25% of our planet’s biodiversity. Let us all understand the true importance of soil health and say no to garbage dumping, Illegal mining, Boring, Under Ground Waste Chemical Inductions, and a lot more atrocities that we humans have been doing to Mother Earth. Let us not forget that just like ours, Earth has a soul too, and that is its soil.
