Later, he his plan includes to fly to the capital city of Kolkata to inaugurate a permanent museum dedicated to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose on the freedom fighter's 125th birth anniversary.

The venue for Modi’s programme is the historic Jerenga Pothar in Upper Assam’s Sivasagar district. Formerly known as Rangpur, Sivasagar was the seat of the powerful Ahom dynasty, who ruled Assam for six centuries. It is part of Upper Assam, which saw strong opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Act last year.

The fast-paced development of Assam in very important to us. The way to 'Atmanirbhar Assam' is through 'Atmavishwaas' (self-confidence) among the people here. 40 per cent of the state's population is taking benefit of 'Ayushmaan Bharat' scheme of the Central government, PM Modi said while addressing the gathering.

However, ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit, the police resorted to lathi charge on activists of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) who took out a rally in Tezpur on to protest the central government's controversial citizenship law.

A Press Release regarding the same was issued earlier which stated: "The issuance of patta/allotment certificates for indigenous people of Assam has been given the highest priority in order to instil a sense of security amongst them. Assam had 5.75 lakh landless families in 2016. The present Government has distributed 2.28 lakhs land pattas/allotment certificates since May 2016. The ceremony on January 23 marks the next step in this process,".

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, speaking on the occasion said that prime minister Modi is the biggest well wisher of Assam and its people. The development of Assam and the northeast region is due to his support, he further added.

The PM is expected to visit Kolkata after the event where the upcoming elections will witness a tussle between the BJP and the Trinamool.
