Prime Minister Narendra Modi has dedicated the 306 km New Rewari-New Madar section of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) to the nation. Through Video conferencing, he also flagged off the world's first double-stack long haul 1.5 km long container train drawn by electric traction from New Ateli-New Kishangarh.
The corridor will be exclusively used by the freight trains running at a maximum speed of 100 km/hr. The aim of the project is to provide a boost to the freight and logistics of the region and connect multi-model logistic hubs with the Delhi-Mumbai corridor.
The event was attended by dignitaries such as Rajasthan's Governor Kalraj Mishra, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal, Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot.
The New Rewari-New Madar section of the WDFC is situated approximately 79 km in Mahendragarh and Rewari districts of Haryana and approximately 227 km in Jaipur, Ajmer, Sikar, Nagaur and Alwar districts of Rajasthan. Railway Minister Piyush Goyal took to twitter to proclaim this feat achieved by the Indian Railways:
Double-stack rail transport is a form of intermodel freight transport where railroads cars carry two layers of intermodel freight containers. Till now, only countries such as China, Brazil, Australia, Canada, USA, Russia, Sweden and Norway have achieved this feat. Social Media platforms have been trending with the news:
