A 6 Year Old Kid Spends 12 Lakhs on a Mobile Game says 'Well, I’ll pay you back, mom'

George Johansson, a 6 year old boy from Wilton, CT in USA is making news for an incident that no family would want in their homes. The boy apparently spent over 16,000 USD from his mom’s credit card using her apple appstore account. The boy was actively engaged in a mobile game called ‘Sonic Forces’ and went on shopping in-game spree on his mother’s iPad. George bough add-on boosters for his game, that started with red rings costing close to 2 USD to all the way gold rings priced at almost 100 USD, this allowed six year old boy to improvise his game avatar, buy new skins and premium features.

Jessica Johnson, the mother of young boy discovered these small repetitive transactions on July 9, with almost 25 charges compiling a total of 2,500 USD on her credit card. Jessica assumed these transactions to be fraudulent and went to the bank authorities.

"The way the charges get bundled made it almost impossible to figure out if they were from a game," Jessica while informing the incident to media.

Unaware of the game, Jessica filled a fraud claim when her bill reached a total of USD 16,293 (approximately 12 Lakh INR). In the month of October the bank informed Jessica that these charges are valid and they have been made from her apple account and hence she need to contact apple for the same.

Upon reaching to apple, she was informed that these charges were made against a game on her iPad and therefore cannot be determined a fraudulent charges. This was when mother came to know that her son went on spending spree on an application for gaming.

"You wouldn’t know how to find it without someone directing you and even Apple could not help as they weren't contacted within 60 days of the charges. I didn't call then because I thought it is likely a fraud with so many small transactions against Apple and Paypal on my account,” said Boy’s Mother when giving a comments to the media.

The mother also admits that she did not kept any preventive controls on her account’s fund transfer settings as she apparently didn’t knew about them.

“Obviously, if I had known there was a setting for that, I wouldn’t have allowed my 6-year-old to run up nearly $20,000 in charges for virtual gold rings,” said Jessica.

Apple could not initiate any refunds as they weren’t contacted within 60 days. Yet Jessica accuses apple and the game designers for making a predatory game which lure kids to fall into the trap and spend more of real life money for the virtual coins.

However, when the young boy was confronted by his mother, the boy said “Well, I’ll pay you back, Mom.”

As the technologies are advancing, parenting responsibilities are also weighing more. Playing online games isn’t just fun these days, there’s a lot on the internet and it is flooded with applications of different kinds. You would’ve definitely heard of a mobile game called ‘the blue whale challenge’, a game specifically made to seed suicidal thoughts into the minds of kids. Children are always vulnerable to online bullying, identity theft, credit card frauds and a lot more over the internet and mobile applications. Therefore, make sure you talk to your children about these risks. A 6-Year-Old Kid Spends 12 Lakhs on a Mobile Game says 'Well, I’ll pay you back, mom'
