New Zealand put on High-Alert after a series of Earthquakes

"People near the coast in the following areas must move immediately to the nearest high ground, out of all tsunami evacuation zones, or as far inland as possible," was the announcement by the National Emergency Management Agency of New Zealand. The declaration was made after a powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the Pacific. Speculations of a Tsunami are underway.

Quakes of 7.3, 7.4 and 8.1 magnitude struck near New Zealand's remote Kermadec Islands in quick succession in early 5th of February, 2022, followed by dozens of powerful aftershocks and a slew of tsunami warnings across the Pacific.

People headed for higher grounds as waves of height up to three metres had been predicted in New Caledonia and Vanuatu, with states and territories from New Zealand to Peru, Russia in the north to even Antarctica also being put on high alert.

However, there were no reports of major damage and the only immediate impact to the population was mild dehydration among the commuters who were stuck for hours in heavy traffic on the French island of Tahiti.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center stated that the threat had not completely ended and that coastal areas of South and Central America could still witness modest tsunami waves but warnings from local authorities were lifted later.

Authorities in Australia, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Vanuatu and French Polynesia later downgraded their warnings.

The U.S. Geological Survey has stated that the first quake had its epicentre at a depth of 13 miles under the ocean about 108 miles northeast of the city of Gisborne. Even residents of Gisborne reported light to moderate shaking.

Earthquakes above the magnitude of 7.5 have capapbilities of producing destructive tsunamis which can pose serious threats to human life, therefore, scientists have designed early-warning tsunami systems which prevent the damages from escalating. India too installed such systems after the catastrophic tsunami of 2004.
