INDIAN FARMERS’ PROTEST | ‘KISAN EKTA MORCHA’ ANNOUNCES A FOUR-HOUR NATIONWIDE RAIL BLOCKADE ON FEB 18

The Indian farmers’ protest has been taking new turns recently. After resorting to a three-hour road blockade on February 6 to push their appeal to abolish the three farm laws, the farmers union ‘Kisan Ekta Morcha’ declared via social media, a four-hour nationwide railway blockade (Rail-Roko) on February 18. There have been hundreds of farmers demonstrating against the newly enacted farm bill by government of India in September last year.

"A nationwide 'rail roko' campaign will be held on February 18, between 12 pm and 4 pm," the official Twitter account of the farmers’ ‘Kisan Ekta Morcha’ tweeted. The dissenting farmers have declared events on February 14 to remember the Pulwama attack and said that on February 12, all toll places in Rajasthan would be "toll-free".

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the Centre and Parliament have "great respect for farmers" demonstrating against the new agricultural laws, adding that the laws were not "exploitative."

For more than two months, thousands of farmers, mainly from Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, have been protesting at the border crossing points in Delhi, demanding the removal of farm laws enacted in September 2020. The demonstrations were mostly peaceful, but on January 26, when a tractor rally scheduled to overlap with Republic Day festivities, it turned terrifying as violence erupted. In connection with the unrest, more than 100 protesters have already been detained by the Delhi police and many are reported missing.

Farmers believe that the latest farm bill threatens their livelihoods and opens the door for agriculture to be regulated by the private sector. On the other hand, the government argues that the new legislation would offer more opportunities for farmers to trade their crops, contribute to better markets, and exempt them from unjust monopolies.  As per the government, the laws are meant to revise the antiquated procurement practices and open up the market for poor and vulnerable farmers.
