Justice delayed but not denied: 26/11 Mastermind arrested in Pakistan

The 26/11 Mumbai attacks which wrecked a havoc in the financial capital of India, Mumbai was conducted by the separatist group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) under the leadership of dreaded terrorist Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi. In a recent move, Pakistan has arrested Lakhvi on terror financing charges as per as the official sources.

Lakhvi, who was on bail since 2015 in the Mumbai attack case, was arrested by the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) of Punjab province. However, the place of his arrest was not revealed by the agencies.

Netizens took to the social media platform twitter with much joy revealing this news:

The statement said: “Following an intelligence-based operation conducted by the CTD Punjab, proscribed organisation LeT leader Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi was arrested on charges of terrorism financing” .

It further stated that Lakhvi, 61, was arrested in a case of terrorism financing registered in a police station of CTD Lahore.

Lakhvi is a UN designated individual.

The report further read: “Lakhvi is accused of running a dispensary, using funds collected for terrorism financing. He and others also collected funds from this dispensary and used these funds for further terrorism financing. He also used these funds for personal expenses".

His trial would be supposedly held before the Anti-Terrorism Court in Lahore.

According to official and credible reports, Lakhvi had reportedly offered to pay the family of Ajmal Kasab the sum of Rs.150,000 for his participation in the attacks. On December 7, 2008 Pakistani armed forces arrested Lakhvi in a raid on an LeT training camp in Pakistani Kashmir. He was among 12 people detained. Pakistan confirmed the arrest but refused to hand over any of its citizens to the Indian authorities stating that Pakistani nationals would be tried in Pakistani courts.

On February 12, 2009 Rehman Malik, Interior Minister, stated that Lakhvi was still in custody and under investigation as the foremost mastermind behind the attacks.
On 25 November 2009, a Pakistani anti-terrorism court formally charged seven suspects, including Lakhvi for planning and execution of the Mumbai attacks, an action that came a day before the first anniversary of the assault.

On 18 December 2014, two days after the Peshawar school attack where 132 school children were massacred by Pakistani Taliban, the Pakistani anti-terrorism court granted bail to Lakhvi in Mumbai attacks case against payment of surety bonds worth Rs. 500,000. On December 19, Lakhvi's bail was rejected by the high court. Pakistan assured that Lakhvi was not released and was in jail. The step was termed as  'positive' by the state of India. However, he was released from jail on bail on 10 April 2015.

It is often stated that Lakhvi along with Lashkar has close links with the Pakistani Intelligence agency ISI which secretly funds and supports their nefarious objectives.
China had reportedly blocked the UN attempts to place Lakhvi on its list of suspected terrorists whose financial assets should be frozen, much to the annoyance of India.
A brief fact-file of Lashkar-e-Taiba is provided below:

The 26/11 attacks on Mumbai are regarded as one of the worst in history with approximately 166 deaths and over 300 injured. For once we can say for now that "Justice delayed is not denied". We can hope that the rule of the law prevails.
