KNOW WHY #DMKFORFARMERS TRENDING | TAMIL NADU’S DMK ON A ONE DAY HUNGER STRIKE

The on-going #FarmersProtest is witnessing new activities daily, some filled with sorrow and some politically motivated. Until now, the involvement into the protest has majorly been from the states of Punjab and Haryana but recently the picture of protest is changing and now we are finding involvements from Southern Indian Polity.

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) India’s first political party to win state elections with a clear majority, other than Indian National Congress (INC) has set foot into farmers protest with its announcement of ‘A Hunger Strike’.

The Tamil Nadu’s DMK party is also the present opposition party in the state, therefore many political analyst have been watching it as a political step to bring the Tamil farmers in the favour to the political party. Also the Tamil Nadu’s state legislative assembly elections are to be conducted in less than 6 months on May 2021 for the 234 legislative seats.

Earlier this day, the DMK and its allies have announced a one-day fast in support of the farmers protesting around the National capital for the abrogation of the three farm laws in the recently passed Farm Bill by GOI.

The protesting farmers demand complete abrogation of the new farm bill that has majorly three laws as follows:

  1. Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act
  2. Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act
  3. Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act

All above three laws have already been into effect following approval of The President of India, Ram Nath Kovind. The farmer leaders also said that protest will be happening in other parts of the country as well, major district headquarters will be venue for marching farmer’s protest.

"Central government led by BJP have passed three laws against farmers. The farmers are protesting continuously for 23 days against it. We took the decision to support protesting farmers. As a part of it, we are doing fasting and protest today,” said M.K. Stalin, the DMK party president.

"Central government is not thinking about farmers or people. BJP and AIADMK government is against people's thought and pass laws against them. They use COVID-19 pandemic and passed it in hurry particularly the three farm laws. They don't care for people and only support and encourage corporates and give many subsidies to them,” he added.

"India is in an agitative mode, particularly in Delhi. They (BJP government) are doing drama in the name of discussion. I welcome all our alliance party members, MLAs, MPs who participate in the protest. We observe two minutes of silence for those farmers who lost their lives in the protest," MK Stalin further adding to his statement.

Today is the 23rd day of the farmers protest and these farmers have been protesting in this cold winter, actively since 26 November 2020. Until now more than 20 farmers have lost their lives due to extreme weather conditions at the National Capital Borders, the situation becomes more miserable when we consider the recent suicide of Saint Baba Ram Singh which he committed in response to farmers atrocities due to protest.
