Punjab Government Removes State Women Commission Chairperson Manisha Gulati; Receives 37.1% Negative Reviews

Manisha Gulati, the chair of the Punjab State Women Commission, has been fired after the social security and women and child development departments withdrew a letter dated September 18, 2020, which had extended her term in that capacity.

The 2020 extension letter was issued with a "bonafide mistake," according to an order by Additional Chief Secretary for Social Security and Women and Child Development Kirpa Shankar Saroj, who issued it on Tuesday.

Gulati joined the BJP last year, just days before the Punjab elections on February 20, 2022. Gulati was appointed to the position following the formation of the Congress government, which was led at the time by then-CM Captain Amarinder Singh.

The order, addressed to Gulati, states that neither an extension to the current chairperson of the commission nor to its members was included in the Punjab State Commission for Women Act, 2001 (and subsequent amendments).

The order says, "According to Section 4(1), the chairperson may only serve for a total of three years. The Act states that neither the current chairperson nor members of the Punjab State Commission for Women are eligible for an extension beyond three years”.
