Saint Suicide at Singhu Border | Farmers Distress Worsened

The farmers protest centric to the Nation Capital of India, is coming with increased agitation and much more rigidity than ever before. The protest is being witnessed as one of the largest running protest in the history of Independent India, with its 22nd day of activeness and chaos near Delhi borders, seems to be a never ending motion.

The shocking news of farmers protest comes from yesterday where a Sikh Priest shot himself dead with his licensed revolver. The matter came to light as a tragic sentiment and spread across news media and social channels like wildfire. Saint Baba Ram Singh, a 65-year-old priest committed suicide during running protest and in front of his followers. The Saint has supposedly left a suicide note that mentioned “he’s hurt from the agony faced by farmers”, the note has been captured as evidence by the local police authority of Kundli and a case for investigation has been registered.

“We’re yet to ascertain the weapon used, meanwhile Saint Ram Singh’s associates have given a statement to police that he committed suicide using his licensed revolver, our investigation is on,” said SHO Ravi Kumar, Kundli Police Station.

The Sikh priest also known as Nanaksar Singhra Wale by is followers, belonged to a Gurudwara (Sikh Temple) in Karnal district of Haryana.

The claimed suicide note by Saint Ram Singh read in Gurmukhi, “I saw the agony of the farmers who are suffering for their rights, out there on roads. My heart is in extreme pain by this. The government is doing injustice by oppressing farmers, this is a sin and tolerating oppression is also a sin. People have shown their unanimity with farmers, and their anger against this injustice in various ways. Few even returned their awards to express their disagreement and anger. I am finishing my life in support of farmers, and against the atrocities of the current government. This is my voice against injustice. This is my voice in support of the tirelessly working farmers”.

The dead body has been taken for post-mortem examination to the city of Karnal.

“After the medical examination, it will be returned to the Nanaksar Gurudwara located in Singhra, where large number of Saint’s associates would perform the last rites this Friday,” informed the officials.

Although, the whole matter of farmer’s protest has been shifted to Supreme Court’s basket, it is still unclear as to what steps are being taken to neutralise the whole situation.

However, the public sentiments are on a rise and a bit on the side of aggravated emotions.

People have taken social media to express these emotions and marking the incident as regrettable.

While talking about Saint Ram Singh, A villager, Karamjeet Virk said “Baba Ram Singh had moved to the gurdwara in Singhra village from a gurdwara in Jagraon, in Punjab, in the early 1990s. He was a religious man who served the people with undivided attention.”

“We recently come across this saddened news of Saint Ram Singh Ji’s death. We also heard about the suicide note that mentioned his struggle to bear farmer’s pain. This is true that many people who have joined the protest will be shocked by this incident and the way government is treating them. We extend our condolences to the family of Baba Ji and his followers,” said a representative from Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU).

What Politicians Had to Say?

“Sant Baba Ram Singh Ji of Karnal committed suicide after seeing the plight of the farmers on the Kundli border. My condolences and tribute in this hour of grief. Many farmers have sacrificed their lives. The brutality of the Modi government has crossed all limits. Quit stubbornness and immediately withdraw the anti-agricultural law!,” said Rahul Gandhi, MP, INC.

“Sant ji’s sacrifice won’t be allowed to go in vain. I urge GOI not to let the situation deteriorate any further & repeal the 3 agri laws,” said Sukhbir Singh Badal, Siromani Akali Dal.
